A study gave AI a man and a woman with identical qualifications — same city, same résumé, same everything.
It told the man to ask for $400,000. It told the woman to ask for $280,000.
$120,000 apart. Same inputs. Different number, because one of them was a woman.
That study is why Valerie is building Ruth.
Everyone says AI is the great equalizer. Valerie's argument, which she made in Fortune, is the opposite: AI was supposed to close the gender wage gap, and instead it's on track to widen it because the models are telling women to ask for less.
Her own path is the counterexample. Two layoffs before 25, then instead of applying for a third job she decided to "be the job.” She turned her personal brand into a business, hit millions of impressions, and never went back to corporate.
Which is why her most pointed take lands the way it does: yes, women have real reasons to be wary of AI. But she thinks opting out is a privilege. No trust fund, middle-class Miami— for her, AI is the thing that gets her to the next level. Sitting it out isn't caution, it's a luxury.
We got into:
•The German study, and the compounding cost of one lowball offer over a career
•"Be the job" — building a one-person business in 90 days after getting laid off
•Why she built a movement before a product, starting with women's hackathons in SF skyscrapers
•The "who do you help?" question that 50 women couldn't answer — and became the product
•The "I help" statement, three content pillars, and how to actually start on LinkedIn
•Negotiation as the one skill AI can't replace
