Skills are just text files full of instructions your AI agent reads and trusts, which is exactly why they're dangerous. Researchers scanned over 30,000 of them and found more than a quarter had a security vulnerability, with around 1 in 20 showing signs of being outright malicious. NVIDIA's Skill Spector scans any skill before you install it and scores how dangerous it is, flagging hidden instructions, tool impersonation, credential theft, malware, and poisoned dependencies, down to the exact file and line.
We also break down the second AI-powered scan mode that catches skills which lie about what they actually do, the setting that's off by default and normally needs an OpenAI key. Then we show how to run that AI check for free using Claude Code's headless mode instead. After that, we turn the whole scanner into a skill of its own and pair it with skills.sh, so you can discover, scan, and safely install new skills as one single workflow.
This matters even more if you run an agent like Hermes that holds all your credentials, because Hermes runs installed skills as-is and won't catch a malicious one for you, so hermes agent skills need this scan most of all.
