Philip Kiely joined Baseten in 2022 as a technical writer who, in his own words, "spent the first year mostly trying not to get fired." Four years later he's published Inference Engineering — a 256-page book that's become the closest thing the field has to a textbook.
In this episode we get into why most companies are making a mistake by renting their intelligence a token at a time, why he's not worried about an AI bubble (his answer is arithmetic, not optimism), and what actually happens inside an inference company in the 24 hours after a new model drops.
Since we filmed, Baseten raised a $1.5B Series F at a $13B valuation — their fourth raise in 18 months, with inference volume up 40x in a year. Their announcement says customers are "more motivated than ever to own their intelligence" — the same phrase Philip used with me on the pod.
If you've ever wondered where tokens come from, why GPUs cost so much, or whether this whole thing is about to pop — this is the conversation.
