We tested Opus 4.7 vs GPT 5.5 in their own CLIs to find the best AI for coding. Since the GPT 5.5 release closed the gap with Claude Code, we ran nine categories to settle the openai vs anthropic debate and see which model actually earns a spot in your workflow.

In this AI tools comparison, we put Opus 4.7 and GPT 5.5 head to head in their native environments, Claude Code and Codex CLI. The GPT 5.5 release brought OpenAI almost level with Anthropic Claude on coding, so we wanted to see which one actually ships better products.
We covered nine categories across usability, cost, building, context management, features, and subagents. On usability, we looked at the Claude Code 2.1.0 issues, the auto mode permission changes, and Codex's Rust-based UI, personality settings, and pre-installed skills like the agent browser. On cost, we tracked token usage on the same task and found GPT 5.5 used 82k tokens while Opus 4.7 burned through 173k for similar work.
For building, we tested planning depth, greenfield autonomy, init command output, and a full reliability code review. GPT 5.5 felt like a backend engineer focused on functionality and fallbacks, while Opus 4.7 felt like a full-stack engineer balancing logic with UI polish. We also broke down context compaction, project memory vs cross-session memory, and where each one keeps the agent useful after a long run.
If you have been deciding between ChatGPT vs Claude, or just trying to pick the best AI for coding right now, this AI comparison shows where each one wins and where it falls short. We covered Claude features like hooks, sub-agents in worktrees, ultrathink, and the wider Claude AI ecosystem across desktop, mobile, and web. On the Codex side, we covered the attempt flag, image generation in the CLI, and how its sub-agents inherit full context instead of starting fresh.
This continues our coverage from Claude Opus 4.5 to the current Opus 4.7 generation against the latest GPT models. Whether you search for it as Claude vs ChatGPT or GPT vs Claude, this is the openai vs anthropic breakdown for AI agents and coding workflows.
